Laparoscopic Excision of Endometriosis

Laparoscopic excision of endometriosis is a keyhole (laparoscopic) procedure used to diagnose and treat endometriosis.

During a laparoscopic excision of endometriosis, visible areas of endometriosis are carefully cut out (excised) using instruments inserted through small incisions in the abdomen.

Laparoscopic excision is often considered when symptoms of endometriosis have not improved with medication or if a more accurate assessment of the disease is needed.

Laparoscopic excision of endometriosis may be recommended to:

• relieve symptoms such as pelvic pain, painful periods, or pain during sex
• improve fertility, especially if endometriosis is affecting the ovaries, tubes, or pelvic organs
• remove ovarian cysts (endometriomas) or other lesions caused by endometriosis

What's iInvolved in Laparoscopic Excision of Endometriosis?

Laparoscopic surgery is performed under general anaesthetic.

Small incisions are made - usually near the belly button and lower abdomen. A camera (laparoscope) is inserted to examine the pelvis. Fine instruments are used to excise areas of endometriosis, which are then removed through the small incisions.

In some cases, additional procedures may be done, such as dividing adhesions (scar tissue) or removing ovarian cysts. The removed tissue is often sent to the lab for examination under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis.
