Dr. Rajaretnam is away on a Sabbatical at Austin Health in Melbourne, returning early 2026. Dr Nigel Rajaretnam is a specialist Upper Gastrointestinal, Bariatric, Endocrine and General Surgeon with a broad range of expertise in minimally invasive surgery. He has completing multiple prestigious fellowships in Upper GI surgery, Bariatric surgery, Endocrine surgery, and Advanced endoscopy

Dr Rajaretnam graduated with Honours from Trinity College, Dublin, in 2008.  He moved to New Zealand in 2012 , completing his advanced surgical training. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2019.  

He completed two Fellowships before returning to Otago to his appointment as a Consultant Surgeon at Dunedin Hospital and began his private practice at Intus Dunedin and Mercy Hospital. 

In 2025, he wanted to expand on his minimally invasive and complex revisional surgery skills, and sought further training opportunities abroad in Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery at Austin Health as part of his third Fellowship.
