Dr Nigel Rajaretnam is a fellowship-trained Upper Gastrointestinal, Bariatric, Endocrine and General Surgeon with expertise in advanced minimally invasive surgery.
Following completion of his surgical training and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS), Dr Rajaretnam undertook three subspecialty fellowships to further develop expertise in complex upper gastrointestinal and metabolic surgery.
Most recently, he completed an Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship at Austin Health in Melbourne, an ANZMOSS-accredited fellowship recognised as one of Australasia’s leading training programmes in metabolic and bariatric surgery. During this fellowship he gained extensive experience in complex oesophago-gastric surgery, revisional bariatric surgery, and advanced minimally invasive techniques.
Dr Rajaretnam works as a Consultant Surgeon at Dunedin Hospital as well as with Intus. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Rajaretnam is actively involved in surgical education. He is the Convenor of the ALM6 Trauma and Critical Care module at the University of Otago for final year medical students.
His clinical interests include metabolic and bariatric surgery, benign and malignant upper gastrointestinal disease, endocrine surgery, and advanced laparoscopic surgery.
