Fibroscan is a type of liver elastography. Liver elastography is a non-invasive test that uses ultrasound to measure liver stiffness. It can help your specialist to measure and monitor your liver.

What is involved with Fibroscan?
To perform a fibroscan your medical specialist or specialist nurse uses a small probe placed onto the skin of the abdomen.
The probe uses ultrasound to measure liver stiffness. It is connected to a computer which collects the data.

The Examination
The fibroscan will only takes a few minutes.
Fibroscan can be helpful for people with liver disease. Your specialist will advise you if this test might help guide your personalised treatment regime.
Step 1
You will be ask to lie on the examination couch and to lift you clothing to allow access to your lower ribs and upper abdomen on the right side.
Step 2
Water-based ultrasound gel will be applied to your skin. This helps the ultrasound to make contact with your skin and to generate and image.
Step 3
Measurements will be taken from a few places on your liver. This will only take a few minutes.
