First Public Endoscopy Services Available in Queenstown and Wānaka

News

Residents of Queenstown and Upper Clutha are now able to access publicly funded endoscopy procedures closer to home. In a significant first for the region, Intus Specialist Health Care has been approved to provide public endoscopy services at its Queenstown and Wānaka clinics, saving patients from having to travel to Invercargill or Dunedin for their procedures.

Intus is the South Island’s largest multi-disciplinary provider of specialist gastrointestinal and colorectal health care, including a 20-year track record in the Southern Lakes region. Director and Surgeon, Richard Perry, says the team is delighted to be able to expand access to these key services for the local community.

Dr Perry says faster local access will lead to better outcomes for Queenstown and Wānaka residents such as early detection and prevention of bowel cancer.

“We find polyps in more than half of people undergoing colonoscopy. While many of these are harmless, nearly all bowel cancers begin as polyps so finding and removing them at colonoscopy is the key to preventing bowel cancer.”

“Early detection can make the difference between a cancer that is easily treated and one that becomes life-threatening. Being able to offer colonoscopy locally means people can be seen sooner, which ultimately saves lives and misery.”

Intus has already started treating the first patients on its publicly funded list. They underwent their procedures at its Isle Street clinic in Queenstown and Helwick Street clinic in Wānaka last week. This milestone reflects Intus’ commitment to strengthening healthcare services in the Southern Lakes region and ensuring equitable access.
