IBS or Something Else? Understanding Ongoing Digestive Symptoms

Education

Abdominal pain, bloating and changes in bowel habits are common symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), but they can also indicate other digestive conditions. Getting the right diagnosis is important for effective management.

Common IBS symptoms

IBS affects bowel function and may cause:

  • Abdominal pain or cramping

  • Bloating

  • Diarrhoea or constipation

  • Alternating bowel habits

  • Changes in stool consistency

  • A feeling of incomplete emptying

Symptoms can fluctuate and may be influenced by diet, stress and other factors.

How is IBS diagnosed?

There is no single test for IBS. Diagnosis is based on your symptoms, their duration and whether there are signs of another condition.

Similar symptoms can occur with coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, food intolerances, SIBO and, sometimes, bowel cancer. Avoid self-diagnosing or making major dietary changes without medical advice.

Is a colonoscopy always needed?

Not always. Further testing depends on your symptoms, age, medical and family history, and any warning signs. Tests may include blood or stool tests, breath testing, colonoscopy or gastroscopy.

Managing IBS

Once other conditions have been considered, treatment can be tailored to your symptoms. This may include dietary changes, medication and lifestyle adjustments. A specialist dietitian can help with approaches such as the low FODMAP diet.

If digestive symptoms are affecting your daily life, Intus can help determine whether IBS or another condition is responsible and recommend an appropriate management plan.
