Ganglion

A ganglion is a fluid-filled lump that typically develops near a joint or tendon, most commonly around the wrist, hand, or fingers. Ganglions are benign (non-cancerous) and often form as a smooth, rounded swelling just beneath the skin. The cyst contains a jelly-like fluid comes from the joint or tendon lining.

Ganglions can vary in size from barely noticeable to large enough to interfere with wrist or finger movement.

Ganglions can develop suddenly or gradually and may remain unchanged for long periods, fluctuate in size, or disappear altogether.

What are the symptoms of a ganglion?

In many cases, ganglions are painless and cause no functional issues. However, they may become bothersome, especially during repetitive use or when positioned in high-pressure areas (such as the top of the wrist).

Ganglion Treatment

Most ganglions are harmless and can be safely monitored without treatment if they are not painful or restricting movement. Treatment may be recommended if the cyst causes discomfort, interferes with function, or you're concerned about what it looks like.

Our specialist plastic surgery team are experience in the treatment of ganglions. We will assess your symptoms, explain your options clearly, and help you choose the most appropriate treatment to restore comfort and hand function.

Observation

No treatment is needed if the ganglion is painless and doesn’t affect hand use. Some cysts resolve on their own.

Aspiration

Fluid is drawn out of the ganglion using a needle. This is a quick procedure but recurrence is common.

Surgery

If symptoms persist or the ganglion returns after aspiration, surgical removal may be recommended.
