Gynaecomastia

Gynaecomastia is the benign enlargement of male breast tissue. It is a common condition that can affect one or both sides of the chest. In most cases, it is not harmful to health, but it may cause discomfort, tenderness, or concern about appearance.

Gynaecomastia can occur at different stages of life. Causes include:

  • Hormonal changes during puberty or ageing

  • Certain medications or medical conditions

  • Being overweight, which can increase fat and glandular tissue in the chest

Often gynaecomastia improves on its own, particularly in teenagers, but in some cases it persists.

Gynaecomastia Treatment

If gynaecomastia does not settle naturally, or if it causes significant discomfort or distress, treatment may be considered.

Gynaecomastia is not harmful, but treatment can improve comfort and confidence. The aim of treatment is to restore a more natural chest shape and help you feel more comfortable in your body.

Our specialist plastic surgery team can guide you through the available options, discuss whether surgery is appropriate, and support you through treatment and recovery.

Medical Review

This will check for possible causes, such as medication side effects or hormonal imbalance.

Lifestyle Measures

Lifestyle changes such as weight loss may be recommended, which can reduce fat tissue in the chest.

Surgery

When gynaecomastia persists, surgical treatment may be offered. This can involve liposuction, excision of glandular tissue or a combination of both procedures.
