Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to reduce the size and weight of the breasts. This is done by removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, and reshaping the remaining breast to a smaller, lifted form.

A breast reduction is commonly performed to relieve physical discomfort or improve body confidence.

Your plastic surgeon will help determine if surgery is appropriate based on your symptoms, goals, and overall health.

A breast reduction may be recommended to:

  • relieve back, neck, or shoulder pain caused by large breasts

  • reduce skin irritation or rashes under the breast fold

  • improve posture and ability to exercise comfortably

  • correct uneven or asymmetrical breasts

  • improve self-esteem or body image

What's Involved in a Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and usually takes 2–3 hours.

During the procedure:

  • excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed

  • the remaining breast tissue is reshaped and lifted

  • the nipples are usually repositioned higher on the breast

  • dissolvable stitches are used, and dressings applied

In some cases, liposuction may also be used to help reduce volume at the sides of the chest.
