Fat Grafting
As we age or experience weight loss, the face and body can lose volume, leading to hollowness, sagging, or changes in contour. Fat grafting, also known as autologous fat transfer, is a natural technique that uses your own fat to restore volume, enhance shape, and soften features.
Fat can be carefully collected from one area of the body, such as the abdomen or thighs, and re-injected into another area - most commonly the face, breasts, hands, or buttocks. The result is subtle, long-lasting enhancement using your own tissue.
Fat grafting can be performed on its own or alongside other procedures for both aesthetic and reconstructive purposes. It is often used to smooth facial lines, enhance lips or cheeks, improve contour irregularities, or restore softness after injury or surgery.
Choosing a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon trained in aesthetics ensures that fat grafting is performed with precision and care - using refined techniques to maximise fat survival, minimise scarring, and create natural-looking results.
What's Involved in Fat Grafting?
Fat grafting is usually performed as a day procedure, often under local anaesthetic with sedation or general anaesthesia, depending on the area being treated. The process involves three main steps.
Because the fat comes from your own body, there is no risk of allergic reaction or rejection. Not all of the transferred fat will survive, typically 50–70% is retained, so slight overcorrection may be planned, and more than one session may be recommended for optimal results.
Your surgeon will guide you through your options, tailor the treatment to your goals, and support your recovery from start to finish. With thoughtful planning and expert technique, fat grafting can provide soft, natural enhancement - using your own tissue to restore harmony, contour, and confidence.
Step 1
Fat is gently removed through liposuction from areas such as the lower abdomen, thighs, or flanks.
Step 2
The fat is purified to remove excess fluid, oils, and damaged cells, ensuring only healthy fat is re-injected.
Step 3
Small amounts of fat are carefully injected into the target area, layering the fat to build volume and improve contour.
