Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass

A Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a well-established bariatric procedure that combines stomach restriction with changes to the digestive system to support significant, long-term weight loss. It is particularly effective for many obesity-related health conditions and may also improve symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). Gastric bypass surgery is offered at Intus Dunedin as part of a comprehensive weight management programme.

This procedure may be suitable for people who:

  • Have obesity and associated medical conditions

  • Experience severe reflux alongside obesity

  • Have Type 2 diabetes

  • Have not achieved lasting results through other weight management approaches

  • Require an alternative to sleeve gastrectomy

The most appropriate procedure will depend on your individual health, lifestyle, and treatment goals.

What's Involved in a Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass?

During the procedure the surgeon creates a small stomach pouch and reconnects part of the small intestine, reducing both food intake and calorie absorption.

These changes also influence hormones that regulate appetite and blood sugar.
