Scar Revision

Scars are a natural part of the healing process, but some can be raised, indented, tight, discoloured, or otherwise bothersome. While many scars fade over time, others may cause discomfort, restrict movement, or lead to concerns about appearance and self-confidence.

Scar revision surgery may be considered when:

  • A scar is raised, sunken, stretched, or otherwise noticeable

  • The scar causes itching, pain, or restricts movement

  • You feel self-conscious or unhappy about the scar’s appearance

Scar revision can be performed for medical, functional, or cosmetic reasons — and often a combination of all three.

Choosing a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon ensures that the revision is approached with both function and aesthetics in mind, especially in delicate or visible areas such as the face, neck, hands, or joints.

What's Involved in Scar Revision Surgery

Scar revision is usually performed as a day procedure. In many cases, it can be done safely under local anaesthetic. For larger or more complex revisions, sedation or general anaesthesia may be recommended.

Your surgeon will guide you through the available options, help set realistic expectations, and provide support from initial consultation through to recovery - so you can feel more confident in both your comfort and appearance.

The Procedure

The approach depends on the type, size, and location of the scar, and may involve:

  • Excision - cutting out the scar and re-closing the wound

  • Z-plasty or W-plasty - techniques to reorient a scar along natural skin lines or break up long scars

  • Skin grafts or flaps - for scars that require reconstruction or coverage

  • Dermabrasion, laser, or steroid injections - may be used in combination to improve texture, colour, or height

Specialised Techniques

Our plastic surgery team use specialised techniques to reduce tension, align incisions with natural creases (Langer’s lines), and optimise scar healing and appearance. The goal is not to remove the scar entirely, but to make it less noticeable and more comfortable.
