Scars & Skin Lesions
Scars, birthmarks, moles, and other skin lesions are common and usually harmless. However, some may cause discomfort, concern about appearance, or uncertainty about diagnosis.

Surgical removal is considered when:
There is concern about skin cancer (melanoma or non-melanoma)
It causes irritation, bleeding, or recurrent infections
It affects your appearance or confidence
It interferes with clothing, shaving, or daily activities
Procedures can be performed for medical, functional, or cosmetic reasons - often a combination of these.
Involving a plastic and reconstructive surgeon ensures not only safe and thorough removal, but also an emphasis on aesthetic outcome and minimal scarring, especially in visible or delicate areas.
What Does the Procedure Involve?
Skin lesion removal is usually a minor procedure performed as day case. Many of these procedures can be carried out safely and effectively under local anaesthetics. For some patients sedation or general anaesthesia may also be considered.

The Procedure
Typically, procedures to remove skin lesions involve local anaesthetic to numb the area, excision (surgical removal) of the lesion, and careful closure of the wound with fine sutures to minimise scarring.
In some cases, skin reconstruction techniques such as skin flaps or grafts may be used for larger or more complex defects

Specialist Surgeons
Plastic and reconstructive surgeons bring specialised training in both the technical removal of skin lesions and the art of aesthetic repair. This is especially important when the lesion is on the face, neck, or hands.
They will take care to plan incisions along natural skin lines (Langer’s lines) for optimal healing, minimise disruption to surrounding tissue, and use precise techniques to reduce scar visibility.
