Sleeve Gastrectomy

A sleeve gastrectomy is one of the most commonly performed bariatric procedures worldwide and can be an effective treatment option for people living with obesity and weight-related health conditions. At Intus Dunedin, sleeve gastrectomy forms part of our comprehensive bariatric and weight management service, where surgery is considered alongside medical management, nutrition, psychology, and lifestyle support to help patients achieve sustainable, long-term health improvements.

A sleeve gastrectomy may be suitable for people who have been unable to achieve long-term weight loss through diet, exercise, or medical treatment alone.

It may be considered for people who:

  • Have obesity affecting their health or quality of life

  • Have obesity-related conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, high blood pressure or joint pain

  • Have struggled with repeated weight loss and regain

  • Are committed to making long-term lifestyle changes following surgery

  • Have undergone a comprehensive assessment by our bariatric team

Rather than simply reducing weight, a sleeve gastrectomy aims to improve overall health, mobility, quality of life, and obesity-related medical conditions.

Every patient is different, which is why surgery is only recommended after careful assessment by our multidisciplinary team.

What's Involved in a Sleeve Gastrectomy?

A sleeve gastrectomy is performed laparoscopically (keyhole surgery) under general anaesthetic.

During the procedure, approximately 75–80% of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow sleeve-shaped stomach. This reduces the amount of food the stomach can comfortably hold and also changes the production of hormones involved in appetite and fullness, helping many patients feel satisfied with smaller meals.

Most patients stay in hospital for one to two nights before returning home.
