Join us online for an Intus CME with Dr Nigel Rajaretnam, open to GPs and Nurse Practitioners across New Zealand. This session will explore the biology of obesity and the evolving role of medications and metabolic surgery in modern obesity care.
This event has been endorsed by The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) and approved for 2 CME credits for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) purposes. Credits will be uploaded on behalf of RNZCGP Fellows.
About this Session
Dr Nigel Rajaretnam leads the Bariatric and Weight Management team at Intus Dunedin and has extensive experience across both medical and surgical approaches to obesity care.
Obesity is a complex chronic condition influenced by powerful biological mechanisms that can make both weight loss and maintaining weight loss difficult. This session will explore the biology of obesity, why relapse is common, and how our understanding of the condition is shaping modern approaches to treatment.
Session focus:
The biology of obesity and the mechanisms that influence body weight
Why obesity can be difficult to treat and why weight regain is common
The role of behavioural, pharmacological and surgical therapies
How different treatment approaches can work together to support long-term management
Emerging therapies and the future of obesity treatment
Learning Outcomes
Develop a greater understanding of the biology of obesity and the mechanisms that influence body weight.
Understand why weight loss can be difficult to maintain and the biological factors that contribute to relapse.
Recognise the roles of behavioural support, pharmacological treatment and metabolic surgery in modern obesity management.
