Endo-anal Ultrasound
Endo-anal ultrasound is a non-invasive test to evaluate the anatomy of the anal canal by producing detailed images of the anal canal and surrounding muscles.

What is involved in endo-anal ultrasound?
Endo-anal ultrasound uses ultrasound waves to image the muscles around your rectum and anus.
The ultrasound wand is placed inside your rectum. It is connected to a computer that turns the signals it collects into a picture of the muscles.
Endo-anal ultrasound can be useful for people with problems affecting the sphincter muscles around the anus, for example faecal incontinence.
The Examination
The examination is not painful and only takes a few minutes. It will performed by one of our doctors or nurses during an appointment set up for that purpose.
Anorectal physiology testing is often performed at the same appointment as endo-anal ultrasound.
Your specialist will advise you if this test might help guide your personalised treatment regime.
Step 1
When you arrive for the test you’ll be asked to undress from the waist down or change into a hospital gown.
Step 2
You’ll be asked to lie on your side on the examination couch with your knees up, covered by a sheet. The doctor or nurse will perform a brief rectal examination before gently inserting the ultrasound wand into your rectum.
Step 3
The ultrasound will be used to take a series of images. This will take about 5 minutes.
