What is inguinal hernia repair?

Inguinal hernia repair is an operation to repair a weak spot in the abdominal muscles near the groin that has allowed tissue, such as part of the intestine, to bulge through, forming an inguinal hernia.

Why is inguinal hernia repair performed? 

Inguinal hernia repair is performed to relieve the symptoms associated with an inguinal hernia, and to prevent the hernia from enlarging or becoming trapped (strangulated), which could lead to serious complications.

What's Involved in Inguinal Hernia Repair

There are two main types of surgery.

Both methods are typically performed under general anaesthesia and are often done as day surgery meaning you can go home the same day. 

Open Surgery

A single cut is made in the groin to push the hernia back into place and reinforce the abdominal wall, often using a mesh. 

Keyhole (laparoscopic) Surgery

Several small incisions are made and special instruments are used to repair the hernia from the inside often using a mesh.
