Umbilical Hernia Repair
Repairing umbilical hernias with safe, effective treatment - relieving discomfort and reducing the risk of complications.

What is umbilical hernia repair?
Umbilical hernia repair is an operation to repair a weak spot in the abdominal muscles at the tummy button (umbilicus) that has allowed allows tissue, such as part of the intestine, to bulge through, forming an umbilical hernia.
Why is umbilical hernia repair performed?
Umbilical hernia repair is performed to relieve the symptoms associated with an inguinal hernia, and to prevent the hernia from enlarging or becoming trapped (strangulated), which could lead to serious complications.
What's Involved in Umbilical Hernia Repair?
There are two main types of surgery.
Both methods are typically performed under general anaesthesia and are often done as day surgery meaning you can go home the same day.
Open Surgery
A single cut is made near the umbilicus to push the hernia back into place and reinforce the abdominal wall, often using a mesh.
Keyhole (laparoscopic) Surgery
Several small incisions are made and special instruments are used to repair the hernia from the inside, often using a mesh.
